How often should you wash your hair?

There is no single right number. It should match your scalp and how much you sweat. In a controlled study of adults with healthy scalps, daily washing beat weekly washing on every outcome measured, including hair brittleness. And the fear behind washing less, that it makes your scalp produce more oil, was measured directly in 120 men and did not happen. "Once a week" is a habit people repeat, not something the evidence actually found.

Does washing more often make your scalp oilier?

No. The controlled evidence does not back it up.

The "rebound oil" theory says shampooing tells your oil glands to make more oil. But oil output is mostly set by hormones and genetics. Washing off surface oil does not raise how much your scalp makes over time. What frequency actually changes is how much old, stale oil and debris is sitting on your scalp at any given moment.

That difference matters because stale oil is the part that irritates skin. The longer sebum sits, the more it oxidises, and oxidised oil is what drives itch, flaking, and smell. Washing regularly clears that oil before it builds up. The study's own authors concluded that fears of overcleaning were unfounded, both by their measurements and by what people reported feeling, in the group they studied.

What did the wash frequency study actually measure?

Two linked studies, more than 1,500 people, and more than just self reports.

The two halves are not equally strong, and the difference matters. One part surveyed people's existing wash habits against measured scalp and hair outcomes. Satisfaction was highest, and flaking was lowest, at five to six washes a week. Nobody was assigned that number, so it tells you what went together, not what caused what, and "five to six is the right number" is more than that half can carry. The other part compared washing daily against going seven days without washing. Daily washing beat weekly on every measure: flaking, itch, dryness, smell, stale oil, and how good people said their hair looked.

One result surprised the researchers. Hair loss, hair brittleness, and hair smoothness were not made worse by frequent washing. They slightly improved.

Two things are worth knowing about this study. Everyone in it was an Asian adult, mostly straight haired, with a healthy scalp. And three of the five authors work at Procter & Gamble, including the first and the last one; the other two are university dermatologists. A result favouring frequent washing lines up with that company's interest. Neither fact makes the findings wrong, and the controlled half of the study is still the best test anyone has run. Both are worth keeping in mind when the numbers get quoted.

Why does "wash once a week" fail as a rule?

Because it picks one number for something that is different for everyone, and it picks the wrong direction for most scalps.

Oil does not wait a week. It is made continuously, and it oxidises where it sits, which is what turns it stale and irritating. On a weekly schedule most of those days go by with that load building up on the scalp. For a normal or oily scalp, that causes the flaking and itching the rule is supposed to prevent. We are not going to give you a number of days for how fast it comes back, because the only studies that measured the re-oiling curve were run by one company on their own subjects.

The rule also survives because of a misdiagnosis. People who wash rarely with a harsh shampoo really do notice stripping and oily rebound, and they are right that something is wrong. The problem is the harsh shampoo, not how often they wash. Washing less treats the symptom and leaves the real cause untouched.

Does this apply to curly and coily hair?

Not directly.

The study only looked at straight haired adults with no scalp disease. Sebum, the scalp's natural oil, slides down a straight strand easily. It moves much more slowly down a tightly curled one, so the same wash schedule will not give the same result on both. Curly and coily hair patterns usually do better washing less often, for that reason, and nothing here changes that.

What the study does support is that frequent washing is not automatically damaging. That is not a new number to follow. It is one less thing to worry about.

So what actually decides your number?

Your scalp, your sweat, and the shampoo you are using.

An oily scalp, a scalp that flakes or itches, or heavy training and sweating all push your number up. A dry or reactive scalp pushes it down, and so does a tighter curl pattern. Frequency also never stands alone: washing often with a gentle, mildly acidic shampoo gives a different result than washing often with a harsh one. You need to get both right together.

Most shampoos produced no significant change in output, and the authors state the work "confirms the unreality of the so-called reactive seborrhea, in which the sebaceous excretion increases with the frequency of most hair washes." Two shampoos did raise sebum flow, and those were the ones with irritancy potential, a link the authors propose but state was not proven. University hospital authorship (Department of Dermatopathology, CHU Sart Tilman, Liège), supported by a Belgian government research centre grant, no company affiliation. This is the study that measures the thing the myth actually claims, which is oil production, rather than scalp condition. Two limits worth your attention: every subject had androgenetic alopecia and mild dandruff, so this is not a general healthy scalp, and the paper is old enough to have no DOI, which means you cannot look it up by identifier the way you can with the others here. We hold it to the same standard we hold the weakest source on our gel page, and we are telling you both.
  • On the study we removed. This page previously cited Gao et al., 2019 for how fast sebum comes back. We took it down. It is authored entirely by L'Oreal Research and Innovation, it ran on 123 Chinese men aged 18 to 35, and what it actually measured is how far oil travels down the hair shaft, not how quickly the scalp reoils. The only large study of the re-oiling curve itself is also L'Oreal's, so we are not quoting a number for it at all.

What this means for your routine

Pick frequency from your scalp, not from a number you heard.

If your scalp is oily, flaking, or itching, washing more often will likely help, and the evidence says it will not cost you healthy hair. If your scalp is dry or reactive, or your curl pattern is tight, washing less often is the better default. Either way, check your shampoo before you change your schedule. Most people who think they need to wash less are actually using something too harsh.
