Do silicones damage hair?
No. Silicones lay a thin film on the hair shaft that lowers friction, slows moisture loss, and increases shine. The film is not damage. The real trade off is buildup: water insoluble silicones such as dimethicone accumulate, and the strong shampoos needed to strip them are what can dry the cuticle, especially on fragile hair.

What do silicones actually do to hair?
They coat it, and the coating does specific measurable things.
Silicones are polymers built from repeating siloxane bonds. Applied to hair, they lay down a thin film that fills the gaps between cuticle scales. That has three consequences. Friction between strands drops, so hair slides rather than catching, which means less mechanical breakage during combing and handling. The film acts as a partial moisture barrier, slowing water loss from the fiber. And the smoother surface reflects light more evenly, which is what reads as shine.
None of that is a chemical attack on the hair. It is a physical film sitting on a fiber that is already dead keratin. The word "damage" does not describe the mechanism.
Is silicone buildup a real problem?
It is real, and it is the honest downside. It is also narrower than the fear suggests.
Water insoluble silicones do not rinse away in normal washing, so with repeated use they layer. Hair can end up feeling coated, weighed down, or dull. That is a genuine complaint and worth taking seriously.
What buildup is not is structural harm. Nothing is being dissolved or broken. The strand is carrying more film than it needs, and the fix is to remove the film.
So where does the actual damage come from?
From removing it, when removal is done too aggressively and too often.
Clearing water insoluble silicone residue requires strong detergency, typically sulfate surfactants such as sodium lauryl sulfate. Used occasionally, that is a functioning system: film goes on, film comes off, repeat. Used excessively, strong surfactants strip natural lipids and can leave the cuticle dry, roughened, and brittle. The review that documents the benefits of silicones documents this as the cost, and notes it lands harder on delicate or textured hair.
That reframes the whole debate. The thing worth avoiding is a cycle, not an ingredient: heavy insoluble silicone plus frequent aggressive stripping, run indefinitely. Remove either half and the cycle stops being a problem.
Which silicones build up and which do not?
The split is solubility, and it is the single most useful thing to know here.
Water insoluble silicones, dimethicone being the common one, are the ones that accumulate and need strong cleansing to clear. Water soluble and volatile silicones sidestep the buildup problem, either by rinsing away or by evaporating. Same ingredient family, meaningfully different routine consequences.
Which means "contains silicone" is not enough information to judge a product. Which silicone, and whether your routine ever clarifies, is the actual question.
Is there anything else worth knowing?
One thing that has nothing to do with your hair: cyclic silicones biodegrade poorly, which raises environmental and bioaccumulation concerns. That is a legitimate reason someone might choose to avoid a specific silicone type. It is a different argument from the hair health one, and it should be made on its own terms rather than smuggled in as a damage claim.

What this means for your routine
If silicones are the only thing you removed from your routine, you probably removed a functioning anti friction and shine tool for a reason that does not hold.
The practical version is a pair of decisions. Know whether the silicones in your products are water insoluble or not, since that decides whether buildup is even on the table. And if they are, clarify periodically rather than either never clarifying or stripping hard every wash. Fragile and textured hair has the least room for error here, because it takes the aggressive cleansing worst.
