Is natural haircare actually better?
No. Where an ingredient comes from does not predict how well it performs on hair. Plant oils can be too heavy, too weak, or irritating. The right synthetic often outperforms them. Natural is a sourcing story, not a performance claim. Judge a product by what its ingredients do on the fiber, not by the origin printed on the front.
- Source is not a quality signal. Neither direction. Natural is not automatically better and synthetic is not automatically better.
- Plant oils and essential oils are real ingredients with real downsides: weight, low potency, and fragrance irritation.
- "Natural" is a marketing category. It groups ingredients by where they came from, which is the one property that says nothing about how they behave on hair.
- The question that replaces it: what does this ingredient do to the fiber, and does the evidence support it.
What does "natural" actually tell you about a product?
Almost nothing that matters.
It tells you an ingredient was derived from a plant or mineral rather than synthesised. That is a fact about supply chain, not about performance on hair.
The properties that decide whether a product works are different: how heavy the molecule is, whether it deposits on the fiber or rinses off, whether it lowers friction, whether it irritates skin, and at what concentration it does any of that. Two ingredients can share an origin and behave in opposite ways. Two ingredients can have opposite origins and do the same job.
So the split that the label draws is not the split that matters.
Are natural ingredients ever the wrong choice?
Yes, and the failure modes are specific rather than dramatic.
Plant oils can be too heavy for the hair they are put on, leaving it weighed down or greasy instead of conditioned. They can be too gentle, which is a polite way of saying they do not do enough of the job you needed done. And essential oils and botanical fragrance components are a common source of scalp irritation. Being plant derived does not exempt an ingredient from irritating skin. Fragrance is fragrance regardless of where it was distilled from.
None of that makes plant oils bad. It makes them ingredients, with a fit range like every other ingredient.
Is synthetic automatically better then?
No, and this is where most debunks of this myth go wrong.
Flipping the rule does not fix the rule. "Synthetic is better" is the same kind of claim as "natural is better": an origin story doing the work that evidence should be doing. There are synthetic ingredients that are heavy, poorly suited, or unnecessary in a formula, exactly as there are plant oils that are.
The correction is not a new hierarchy. It is the removal of one. Source drops out of the decision entirely.
What should you look at instead?
What the ingredient does, in what amount, on the hair and scalp you actually have.
That means asking mechanism level questions. Does this reduce friction on the fiber. Does it clean the scalp, and how aggressively. Does it stay on the strand after rinsing or wash away. Is the amount in this formula enough to do anything. Is there evidence behind the specific effect being claimed, or only behind the ingredient being present.
Those questions are harder than reading the front of a bottle. They are also the only ones that predict the result.

- Oove core position. "Natural = better, synthetic = worse" is rejected. Optimal is what the evidence supports, not what sounds natural. Mechanism and consensus level, not a single trial.

A worked example of the principle: a heavily demonised synthetic class is shown to reduce friction, limit moisture loss, and increase shine, with a specific and manageable trade off rather than a blanket harm.
- On the absence of a head to head trial. No study tests natural against synthetic as categories, because the categories do not describe anything measurable. That is the point.
What this means for your routine
Stop using the front of the bottle as a filter. It sorts products by a property that does not predict outcomes, and it costs you access to ingredients that would have worked.
Replace it with a narrower question: what does my hair and scalp actually need done, and which ingredient does that job well. Sometimes the answer is a plant oil. Often it is not. The point is that you arrive at it by mechanism instead of by category.
